Digital Fluency Intensive- Week 5 (online)

Today we focused on different aspects of Google sites, from how to make them visually appealing, to tips and pedagogy which can help inform site set up.

The first session explored how having everything available on a site and visible to learners and their whanau allows for them to see the processes and reasoning behind what they are doing. Which helps students have clarity about what they are doing and why, so they don't have to be mindreaders to be successful.

We also looked at Multi Modal and Multi Textual (T shaped literacy). And how these should inform how we plan and set up our sites.

We used these ideas and some site tools to create a few sites over the rest of the session. Some of the tools that I found very helpful were:
- how to make buttons in drawings
- Matching colour codes using the Colourpick Eyedropper addon.

I created and worked on two sites over the day.

This site was made while we were looking at T shaped learning

When we were looking at Fake News as a small group we used Google Jamboard. This was such a cool app that I hadn't seen before! I like how you can use it kind of like padlet, but also to create mindmaps, or use it like a digital whiteboard. It is definitely one I will use more!

  1. How did I know you were going to appreciate the colour picker! haha! Thanks for sharing your reflection and the links to your sites. Google Jamboard is a great tool that I am just learning about myself too. I like the way it is collaborative - just wish it could be embedded! Is there anything you are going to change on your school site as a result of this new learning?

    1. There is heaps! I have already started to change boring buttons to drawings ones, though some are staying plain. I also want to focus on a cohesive colour scheme, but can see me flip-flopping on that for a while!

  2. Hi Jayne,

It was great to work with you last week. Thanks for being in my first Jamboard session! I think it worked well, but like Kelsey said, it would be so good if you could embed it into your site. Making buttons in drawing is a great way to really personalise your site and make it your own. I look forward to seeing where you get to with our next session tomorrow where we continue to work on our class sites.

    1. Thanks Vicki, I really enjoyed Jamboard! It was nice to explore it with others :) I had avoided making buttons as it felt like a time-waster when just trying to get things up on my site, so have hugely enjoyed the last few sessions to change boring buttons!
