Another week done!
Today's session I thought was going to be wayyy above my head, given it centered around programming and coding.
I was surprised how much I had already picked up from random exposure over the years, and it was not nearly as daunting as I thought.
I really enjoyed listening to this mornings sessions as I think understanding what is going on in the background of our digital world will have huge impacts on the abilities and job opportunities of the future. I get some of the basic principles behind programming and coding but I definitely do not have the analytical mind to be able to do it it without major instructions/guides. I am really thankful for all of the apps and tools available now so we can do things like websites and blogs without having to understand and write the script behind it!
The deep dive around the future of tech was fascinating. And I really enjoyed the Moral Machine 'game' I found it interesting (and awful) trying to weigh up decisions around who should die, but also got quite frustrated reading the summary data from my choices. The main reason for this being that in each picture there were a wide range of factors to weigh up, and the statistics on our choices did not look at that as a whole. For example, my summary statistics stated I saved more females than males, but that was because when given the choice to swerve, or if it was a green crossing, the male was on the wrong side of that choice (not just hit because he was male). This showed me how the programming for autonomous vehicles would be sooo precariously balanced! It is also quite interesting to think about the fact that our individual morality is very different- so while I'd rather be in a self driving care that sacrifices me over a pedestrian, others may not agree... It also made me realise that I am definitely not ready to trust technology to make my choices for me when it comes to those sorts of things!
I enjoyed our create task today, although I got very frustrated with the Mihi Maker and clarity of instructions (as well as a frozen computer, and accidentally deleting background bits and starting again....😒). I did end up with a completed wee game going through a simplistic Pepeha. You can play by using the < and > keys to move forward and backwards to see my maunga, awa, waka and other bits about me!
I am excited for the Google educators exam next week, and pleased with all the skills and confidence to problem solve and try new tools I have gained over these 8 weeks.

Kia ora Jayne,
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting to read your experience around the moral machine game. I too was frustrated by some of my 'results' haha.
Awesome to see you figured out the Mihi Maker! That proved to be more challenging than the last time I did it. I too am glad that I can follow instructions and guides rather than go at coding alone.
I can't believe we are at the end of this course already. Time has flown by this year. It is great to reflect upon the knowledge you have gained since the beginning (around Manaiakalani as well as digital fluency).
I look forward to seeing some of the things you have picked up continue to grow in your space.
