Digital Fluency Intensive- Week 9 (Online)

Today is our last session for the DFI, where we got to sit the Google Certified Educators exams. I chose to sit Level 1 over the weekend so I could sit Level 2 today.

I found Level 1 quite an experience, as being able to see the time tracking down and your task progression made it feel like much more of a time crunch (although I did not use the entire 3 hours). I also found the multi-choice component far more difficult than the task section- I think this was because I am confident using the G Suite, but still doubt my understanding of where and why to do things (I had to just stop overthinking and commit to answers!)

Level 2, used some features within the G Suite apps that I had never used before, so there was a lot more googling involved!! I also learnt how to make a "pick-a-path" form during the exam, as last time we did them I used Slides instead. Another tool I learnt was analysing data in a Pivot Table. Both of these I can actually imagine myself using in the future.

I am so happy I continued on the DFI during lockdown. I have found the online course experience far more intimate than a "real-life" one, and have felt more connected to my regional group and others on the course by being able to see their faces on the screen (which I definitely not what I expected). The course has taught me tricks and tips which will make my workflow so much easier, as well as more aesthetic- which makes me far happier with the work I produce. I have also been up-skilled in some of the G-suite apps which means I can use them to the extent I knew was possible, but had never taken the time to learn and practice how! Although, I have still got heaps to learn on google sheets :)

The timing of this course could not have been better, the skills and knowledge I have learnt in these 9 weeks have helped my to support my learners in not only my subject, but others too, during lockdown. I have had online tutorials for MyMaps (for my form classes Social Studies), as well as created an entire research internal for my senior biologists, and some Slideshows which are way more visually exciting than any of my pre-lockdown slides!

I am going to miss the Thursday sessions, but cannot wait to get creating :)
