The first few days of the term 3 break were spent in the "Winterless North" for the Bay of Islands Teacher Summit. We had a wonderful time exploring Kerikeri and the Rainbow falls, the freezing cold water of the pool in the rain, and the sites of Paihia where we stayed.
The two days of the summit were hosted at Bay of Islands College in Kawakawa, where we spent time listening to various presenters in breakout sessions, presenting out Pecha Kucha, and getting to go on a cultural experience.
I was lucky enough to go to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds for my cultural experience! It was an incredible experience to be up here and seeing places that we have learned about for so long.
For my first break out I was with Kerry Boyde-Preece discussing Quality Blog posts. It was awesome seeing some of our HHS blogs featured in this session. We had a discussion about things to look at/include in blogs and we used the Blog sharing platform to do this. What I really noticed was the Titles of blogs, and introductions to the learning shared on blogs. Looking at just these aspects really highlighted the need for quality introductions, especially when discussing topics like Bullying and Drugs. The second break out was with Vicky Archer doing a DFI Workflow. There is always so many updates in google that is was a really helpful to have a refresh.
The next session I was a part of was session 4- where we discussed our MIT projects with interested teachers. There was not many Secondary School teachers so I was not as busy as some of the others.
Session 5 was with Steve Smith discussing updates to Google Education. I loved this session as there were so many practical wee tid bits to take back to the classroom, especially Reading mode in chrome.
Session 6 was Text help, which is the company behind ReadWrite. It was really interesting to explore all the capacity of this and how it could be used to support learners in so many ways.
My final session was Future of Learning with OMGTech! This session posed a lot of questions about what we are expected to do as teachers but there are still so many answers as to how we effectively do this for all our learners.
This is my presentation at the Bay of Island Summit, it was the first time presenting to a larger audience. There were a few hiccups but I was happy with how it went overall.
